This modern house was designed for a couple downsizing from their much larger Georgian home. One of our clients used to be an occupational therapist and it was important that the house have a simple, open plan layout, and be future-proofed to accommodate wheelchair access throughout.
The guest rooms and study are located in their own wing of the house which could allow for self-contained accommodation for a carer and the main bathroom has been made large enough that it could be converted for disabled access if it were ever required. The house is also flooded with natural light which afford view of the three external ‘courtyard’ spaces, each of which has been landscaped differently to reflect its use.
Designing for old-age can be overlooked, however, with many of the private houses we work on, we do try and ensure the topic is discussed and planned for if relevant.
