Contemporary extension to a listed building

For this project, the clients asked us to design a single storey extension to create an open plan kitchen/dining/family space. The result was this contemporary glazed extension, which not only connects the kitchen to the garden, but also blends beautifully with the existing house which is a stunning listed building. The interior design for this traditional house had a modern edge with the use of contemporary colours and stone flooring.

We selected Jane Duncan Architectural Services to plan and manage an extension to our grade 2 listed house located in a conservation area in xxxx. The fact that Jane Duncan was a leading figure in the RIBA was a factor in the selection process and on meeting Julie Parkinson, who heads up the interior design business within the partnership, we were impressed by her open and engaging manner.
The project, which began in 2019 and completed in 2020, comprised the interior re-design of a 85 m2 kitchen/dining/study/cloakroom space including a building extension of 42 m2 Julie managed the project very professionally. She was able to demonstrate her experience with the sort of project we were planning by arranging a site visit to a recently completed refurbishment project of an older property with many similar requirements to ours which was hugely helpful. Design, planning and building consents were quickly obtained and we were happy to use Julie’s recommended contractors. Likewise the pricing points in the project were successfully negotiated to all round satisfaction.
Building work commenced on time and, despite the inevitable unforeseen problems with the particular quirks of an older house, completed on time, and importantly, allowing for the added cost of unforeseen work, came in within budget.
The quality of the design and building work shone through on completion, which is a testament to the Julie’s eye for detail, professional approach especially with respect to her recommended choice of contractors, and her unflagging energy and enthusiasm in maintaining the timely progress of the project.
