Kent - Contemporary New Build and Barn Renovation
Replacement dwelling & renovated barn with a modern twist on the local vernacular
Now fully constructed, JDA had designed a new energy efficient contemporary family home to replace a tired, cold, and poorly designed dwelling. The site was located within the Green Belt and AONB, and with a gentle slope that allowed us to provide wonderful view across the paddock and Kent countryside beyond.
The design concept was to create a series of three buildings, traditional in form but contemporary in design, which would be liked together and reflect the appearance of a group of agricultural barns that were a common feature in the area. Each of the blocks was oriented, sized and positioned to work around the location of the existing trees that, although were not protected, did add character to the site.
The chosen materials were brick walls at ground floor, feature timber cladding on the gable ends, clay roof tiles and dark grey aluminium framed windows.
In addition to the new house the existing barn adjacent was renovated to its former glory but with some contemporary touches, notable the feature glazing. It was intended that the house and barn would be read as a pair when approaching the main house and complement each other.
