Chorleywood – Cricket Club

A brand new cricket pavilion and café overlooking Chorleywood Common

Jane Duncan Architects were tasked with designing a replacement pavilion for Chorleywood Cricket Club to replace the rather tired old 1960’s pavilion on the site. The club had teamed up with the charity, Mission EmployAble, who would operate a café from the new building too.

The building is designed so the cricket club facilities, including the lounge, first floor changing rooms and viewing terrace, face towards the playing area, while the café faces towards one of the footpaths across Chorleywood Common. The club lounge and the café are separated by a removable partition so the spaces can operate individually or combine for larger group gatherings.

In planning terms, the site was a particularly tricky one, it is located on Chorleywood Common (where even the grass is afforded protection), in the Green Belt, in the Chorleywood Conservation Area, opposite a Grade II Listed Church, and opposite Chorleywood Parish Council’s offices. Even with all of these constraints, JDA and the consultant team were able to more than double the size of the pavilion building. Black timber cladding and a slate roof have been used to ensure the new building sits quietly in its rather prominent position on the Common and in the context of the Listed Church.
